Experienced forestry consultant, Pat Hardcastle, will guide you through the social, political, economic and land use history of Europe from the middle ages. There is a great deal of useful knowledge to be gleaned from both France and Germany in the organisation and management of Community and Private forests. During the tour, the historical context is teased out to give an understanding of how both the management and silvicultural systems derive from this. Post war history has resulted in major alterations to policy and goals but the historical roots are still very apparent. Important lessons can be gleaned with respect to collaborative forest management and the involvement of the private sector through development projects.
