ProjectsMultiple Objective Forest Management (MOFORM)ECTF was commissioned by Natural Resources International (NRIL) in 2000 to facilitate the development of a cluster of research projects on the theme of the regulation and control of the yield of goods and services from forests. These were planned to be considered under the Forestry Research Programme (FRP) of DFID to follow-up previous FRP projects including the DFID-funded SYMFOR project. However, funding has not been forthcoming and activities are pending. The new research initiatives are aimed at developing tools and knowledge to support financially viable and socially acceptable forest management alternatives to bad management and piracy. The MOFORM (Multiple Objective Forest Management) cluster's objective: to integrate research yield regulation for goods and services from forests with a consideration of the policy, financial, economic and social environments that will influence behaviour and decisions. Growth and Yield Modelling Project (SYMFOR) 1997 - 2003This ECTF project worked with local stakeholders in Indonesia to develop a framework for Silviculture and Yield Management in tropical Forests, (SYMFOR, http://www.symfor.org). This system has been applied to the evaluation of management options for Dipterocarp forests in Indonesia. During 2001, the work expanded to work with new partners in Guyana, French Guiana, Brazil and Ecuador. A version of the SYMFOR ecological model is now available for two forest types in Guyana, and versions were developed for application in French Guiana and Ecuador during 2002. Further information is available from the SYMFOR web site. |
